Writer's Craft Class: Movie Review Assignment

So as the title says it, we were supposed to do a movie review article and well I've been dying to write it Twilight so I did. This is the final version, after our editing sessions in class.
Oh and to all the Polyvorians, now you know my reasoning for saying Twilight Sucked and it was downer when compared to the movie. I shortened the summary as much as I can.

Twilight: Disappointment; Too Fast Too Short

When seventeen year-old Bella Swan leaves the sunny Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in the small and always rainy town of Forks, she does not expect to like it. After all she has made many excuses not to go there several times in the past. Although Bella hates the rainy weather and anything wet, she chooses to do this for her mother, Renèe so she can travel with her new husband, Phil Dwyer, who is a minor league baseball player. Although Bella was an outcast in Phoenix, she soon makes some new friends at the school. To her dismay, several boys in the school compete for her attention. When she sees a boy named Edward Cullen, sitting with his brothers and sisters in the café, she is instantly intrigued. Edward is stunningly attractive, and inhumanly beautiful, yet he is an outsider too. Although the Cullens have lived in Forks for two years, they have never really been accepted by the townsfolk. When Bella sits next to Edward Cullen in her Biology Class, on her first day, Edward seems utterly repulsed by her. He even tries to change his schedule to avoid her, leaving Bella completely puzzled about his malicious attitude towards her. After tricking a family friend, Jacob Black, into telling her the local tribal legends, Bella comes to realize that the Cullens are Vampires. Realizing his secret changes nothing for Bella, because she knows that she is still in love with him, even though he‘s not human. She also finds out that the Cullens are “Vegetarian”, that instead drinking human blood, they drink animal blood. How their relationship is thrown into chaos, when another vampire coven sweeps into Forks, and James, a tracker vampire, decides that he wants to hunt Bella for sport.

After a long wait, the anticipation, and the excitement, all I got was disappointment. Whether it was the bad acting, bad directing, or the terrible special effects, the movie was a total let down.

Kristen Stewart is a very good actress, and I am a fan of hers, however I am very disappointed with her in Twilight. Bella Swan always doubts herself and is unsure of her relationship with Edward. Bella shows her love for Edward every second of her life, in the book, but Kristen acted as though she was certain about everything. She portrayed Bella as a strong girl and positive about her relationship with Edward Cullen.

Edward Cullen played by Robert Pattinson appeared very rough at times. The gradual friendship between Alice and Bella, and Bella and Jacob was completely wiped out.

However Kellan Lutz (Emmett Cullen) and Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale) were the perfect choices for their parts. Kellan Lutz was exactly how I imagined Emmett, and Nikki portrayed Rosalie very well, being a complete bitch towards Bella. My favorite part of the movie is the only good part, the Baseball scene. The special effects in this scene were okay. I really like the part when Rosalie says “My Monkey Man” and also when Edward and Emmett collide. I also loved the choices for Jacob Black (Taylor Launter) and Dr. Cullen (Peter Facinelli).

However, I thought the movie was only half-complete. There were too many parts of the book that were cut out, which made the movie jumpy, as it jumped from one scene to another. A lot of very good parts were emitted. For example, I was really looking forward for the airport scene, when Bella runs away from Jasper, but in the movie, Bella just leaves the Hotel, when Alice and Jasper are downstairs in the Hotel. This was really disappointing. There were many other cool parts that were emitted. The movie was too short and too fast.

The special effects were terrible, especially in the meadow scene. When I read that part, I imagined Edward glowing like when a prophet’s face is shown, however in the movie I could barely notice him sparkling.

The costumes were awful as well. I had imagined a very stylish Alice Cullen, however in the movie; her outfits were no different than everyone else’s. The make-up was the worst part of the movie. It was overly done and it looked terrible. I could see the lipstick on Pattison’s lips. The white-powders were also too obvious. It was just too much.

The music and the sound effects were great. I absolutely loved Pattinson’s voice. Totally unexpected! However, for Bella’s lullaby, I didn’t like the movie version, I liked Pattinson’s version, which was on the web.

Twilight is the new Harry Potter, and it is not something you would want to mess with. The film was very lame and unprofessionally directed, and I now know that my year is officially ruined, as the movie was a huge downer.

Below is one of the questions asked Peter Facinelli, who plays Dr.Cullen, in an interview with Twilight Lexion. Facinelli’s reply is totally true. This is not just another Vampire story, this is so much more. Also about Catherine being a passionate person. All the cast have said this. I think that she was too passionate. She wanted too much, wanted to make it to good and ended it up screwing it. In the interviews, she appears so into it, so passionate, but sometimes, when you are passionate about something, you end up screwing it, because of its expectations. He is also accurate about the book, the first time I picked up the book; I finished it in a one day as well.

Lexicon - Would you tell us about your audition process for the movie?
Peter - There were a few scenes that I had gotten, but no script. I was not interested in doing a Vampire movie, as I am not a huge fan of gory Vampire movies. But then I read the book. I sat down and read it in one day. It was a beautiful love story set in a Vampire tale. I loved how Stephanie chose to explore the human side of vampires in the Cullen family. I fell in love with the story, and was determined to get the part. I read for Catherine, and the audition went well. A few weeks later I heard that they offered the part to someone else. I was devastated. But their deal fell through, and they came back and offered it to me. I was elated. I had already thought the part was gone, so it was a very happy surprise. I laugh sometimes because I read somewhere that originally some of the fans thought I was too old for the part, but the actor they originally offered it to was a decade older than me. (lol)

When asked if she is not self-assured, Kristen replied: “I am, but it takes me five more hours to get self-assured than it does her.” Not knowing her, this would be very hard to believe, as she totally acted confident in the movie.

Buy/Rent: I’m definitely going to buy the movie, only because I am fan of the books. But I’m not impressed by the movie at all. However, I think the movie is worth watching.

Ending Comments: I can only hope that The New Moon is not as bad as Twilight. In fact, I hope I could be impressed with the werewolf sequel instead of disappointed.

Learn To Listen

"The Call at Midnight"

We all know what it's like to get that phone call in the middle of the night. This night's call was no different. Jerking up to the ringing summons, I focused on the red illuminated numbers of my clock. Midnight. Panicky thoughts filled my sleep-dazed mind as I grabbed the receiver.

"Hello?"

My heart pounded, I gripped the phone tighter and eyed my husband, who was now turning to face my side of the bed.

"Mama?" I could hardly hear the whisper over the static. But my thoughts immediately went to my daughter. When the desperate sound of a young crying voice became clearer on the line, I grabbed for my husband and squeezed his wrist.

"Mama, I know it's late. But don't...don't say anything, until I finish. And before you ask, yes, I've been drinking. I nearly ran off the road a few miles back and..."

I drew in a sharp shallow breath, released my husband and pressed my hand against my forehead. Sleep still fogged my mind, and I attempted to fight back the panic. Something wasn't right.

"And I got so scared. All I could think about was how it would hurt you if a policeman came to your door and said I'd been killed. I want...to come home. I know running away was wrong. I know you've been worried sick. I should have called you days ago, but I was afraid...afraid..."

Sobs of deep-felt emotion flowed from the receiver and poured into my heart. Immediately I pictured my daughter's face in my mind and my fogged senses seemed to clear. "I think –"

"No! Please let me finish! Please!" She pleaded, not so much in anger, but in desperation.

I paused and tried to think what to say. Before I could go on, she continued. "I'm pregnant, Mama. I know I shouldn't be drinking now...especially now, but I'm scared, Mama. So scared!"

The voice broke again, and I bit into my lip, feeling my own eyes fill with moisture. I looked at my husband who sat silently mouthing, "Who is it?"

I shook my head and when I didn't answer, he jumped up and left the room, returning seconds later with the portable phone held to his ear.

She must have heard the click on the line because she continued, "Are you still there? Please don't hang up on me! I need you. I feel so alone."

I clutched the phone and stared at my husband, seeking guidance. "I'm here, I wouldn't hang up," I said.

"I should have told you, Mama. I know I should have told you. But when we talk, you just keep telling me what I should do. You read all those pamphlets on how to talk about sex and all, but all you do is talk. You don't listen to me. You never let me tell you how I feel. It is as if my feelings aren't important. Because you're my mother you think you have all the answers. But sometimes I don't need answers. I just want someone to listen."

I swallowed the lump in my throat and stared at the how-to-talk-to-your-kids pamphlets scattered on my nightstand. "I'm listening," I whispered.

"You know, back there on the road, after I got the car under control, I started thinking about the baby and taking care of it. Then I saw this phone booth, and it was as if I could hear you preaching about how people shouldn't drink and drive. So I called a taxi. I want to come home."

"That's good, Honey," I said, relief filling my chest. My husband came closer, sat down beside me and laced his fingers through mine. I knew from his touch that he thought I was doing and saying the right thing.

"But you know, I think I can drive now."

"No!" I snapped. My muscles stiffened, and I tightened the clasp on my husband's hand. "Please, wait for the taxi. Don't hang up on me until the taxi gets there."

"I just want to come home, Mama."

"I know. But do this for your mama. Wait for the taxi, please."

I listened to the silence in fear. When I didn't hear her answer, I bit into my lip and closed my eyes. Somehow I had to stop her from driving.

"There's the taxi, now."

Only when I heard someone in the background asking about a Yellow Cab did I feel my tension easing.

"I'm coming home, Mama." There was a click, and the phone went silent.

Moving from the bed, tears forming in my eyes, I walked out into the hall and went to stand in my sixteen-year-old daughter's room. The dark silence hung thick. My husband came from behind, wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on the top of my head.

I wiped the tears from my cheeks. "We have to learn to listen," I said to him.

He pulled me around to face him. "We'll learn. You'll see." Then he took me into his arms, and I buried my head in his shoulder.

I let him hold me for several moments, then I pulled back and stared back at the bed. He studied me for a second, then asked, "Do you think she'll ever know she dialed the wrong number?"

I looked at our sleeping daughter, then back at him. "Maybe it wasn't such a wrong number."

"Mom, Dad, what are you doing?" The muffled young voice came from under the covers.

I walked over to my daughter, who now sat up staring into darkness. "We're practicing," I answered.

"Practicing what?" she mumbled and laid back on the mattress, her eyes already closed in slumber.

"Listening," I whispered and brushed a hand over her cheek.
